My Dream of Off-grid Living

posted on 1 May 2013

If I had an unlimited spending budget and time, I would keep my self build home very simple. I would get 10 acres and put a small modest home on it. Under 1000 square feet. Inside my home the downstairs would be nothing but an open living room and kitchen, off to one side would be a small bathroom with a beautiful claw foot tub. Oak furniture would give the place a natural look. There would be a paddle ladder leading to the upstairs which would be an open loft floor plan, the entire size of the house. One side would be my sons room and the other mine. I would have small area for sewing and an office. Outside I would have a huge beautiful gazebo area with a large kitchen table for family dinners. There would be several chickens, cows and goats also outside. A very large garden would take up an acre of the land, for fresh fruits and vegetables for the summer and of course to can for the winter. I would have enough solar panels to run my entire house on and a generator. There would also be a septic system installed but we would mostly use a composting toilet. The only type of water we would use would be well water. To sum this up, if I had unlimited money and time, I would keep everything modest and sustainable. That way I would always have unlimited money and time after the initial amount was spent. I would be able to survive mostly off my land, have no mortgage and with my and my husbands income we would be able to have a beautiful nest egg for our sons future. Unlike most people, we believe going small is the way. Less is more.

An Efficient 2 Storey Home, Complete With Outdoor Space

posted on 24 January 2013

If I had an unlimited budget, I would design a home that was 2 stories, with a basement and an attic. There would be a 300 sq ft porch off to one side of the house, and it would be on a raised deck so that you could go from one level of the house to the other without having to go back inside. The screened-in porch would have large fans to keep us cool in the summer, and several space heaters to keep us warm in the winter, so that it could be used year-round. You would enter the house through the front door, which would be on the 2nd floor, which would house the bedrooms. Then you would take a staircase (replete with oak stair parts) down 1 level to be on the main floor, with the kitchen, garage, living and dining rooms, and laundry rooms. The basement would house the laundry machines, and there would be a laundry chute throughout the house so that all the dirty laundry would end up there. A dumbwaiter would carry the clean clothes back up to the appropriate floor, where they could then be distributed out among the family.

Oh, What I Would Change About My House!

posted on 10 September 2012

I feel dissatisfied just doing small jobs around the house - OK, we put in new acrylic panels, added double glazing, gave the place a lick of paint - but these jobs just don't answer the bigger problems. What are they? I would put a bathroom on the main level of the house so that I didn't have to have everyone use the bathroom upstairs. I would love that no one would have to trail through the house to just use the bathroom. This also would be great since I have some health issues and going up and down the stairs is challenging when I am not able to walk. I would also put in a bathtub in the bathroom since we only have access to a shower at our house. We haven't done this yet since we can't afford the materials. We are going to save to do that and my husband can do most of the work with some assistance. I also would have a nice big closet to hold all our personal and beauty products with towels and bathing needs.

Things That Happened when I Moved

posted on 30 July 2012

When I moved to my new apartment I was not impressed because it was my brother that got the apartment for me when I was out of the country and just now I realize that it is out of my taste and it really does not suit my personality. I really have no choice now because that is the only one available for now. The first day I spent there was hell for me because there was no light and I guess the light fixing in the house was bad and I needed to get an electrician to repair but the man I called said he was not available until next week . I am really going to manage and live it through for now with the help of a lamp. Everything is like practically bad in the house, I was really disappointed when I woke up only to find out that there is no hot water flowing from the tap and it is icily cold. I just hope by next week I can have ev3erything fixed .

The Day an Old Friend Got Back Home

posted on 24 June 2012

Just the other night, I had to get up from bed at around midnight because the phone would not stop ringing. I checked the time and asked myself, who calls in the middle of the night? But then, it also crossed my mind that it could be an emergency or something so I dragged myself to pick up the phone. Hello, I managed to say. Who's calling? I asked. It's me, Peter. I heard him say. Peter is my friend. I have not seen him in a long time because he works in another state. I got so excited when I heard his voice. It's you. How have you been? Are you back home now? Peter told me that he is back for a short break. He said he would love to hang out with me the next day. Yes of course. Would you like me to pick you up at the airport? Peter replied, No need for that...I am in fact on my way home now. I'll see you first thing tomorrow morning, okay? Peter and I didn't sleep the whole night as we just could not stop chatting.

Consumer complaints on certain issues should educate you.

posted on 26 January 2012

Are you the kind of a person who feel that consumers should not be complaining all the time? You need to take time to listen to them in order to judge them. If for instance a consumer is complaining about a roofing service that was never perfect even after paying so much money, you need to understand the client because he has done his part only for the service provider to fail him terribly. Clients are always right to complain and instead of judging them, we need to take that as a lesson in order to make wise choices when we will be in need of the same services. If for instance I am complaining about heritage roofing and you feel that I am justified to do it, you will not hire the same services to avoid doing the same. It is time traders offered the best in the market in order for their clients to appreciate them and to feel free to pay for whatever that they are purchasing. If a client will not complain, you will not know what is good in the market and what is bad.

Advice from an expert in the roofing business

posted on 21 October 2011

I am a professional roofer. I work with a prominent company in the United Kingdom. My work is to build very strong and perfect roofs for my clients and ensure that they like what I do. I have been working in this field especially the slating and tiling one for quite a long time. I have gained a lot of experience and served a large number of people. The people that have benefited from my services come back with their friends and relatives. They bring me more work and I give them discounts. Through discounts I get to keep them and they bring me more clients from various parts of the United Kingdom. My advice to the upcoming entrepreneurs in this field is to handle all clients the same way and fairly. Employers should have good working environments for their employees. Employees should give their clients the best services if they want them to come back for more. It is a very competitive world and your hard work and uniqueness will be your selling point. If you play your cards well, you will get what you want.

Creating Your Own Kitchen Lighting Plan

posted on 9 September 2011

Once you've decided that your kitchen is now the new entertainment hub in the house it is time to do some changes with your lighting. The best way to enhance the looks of the room is to create your own kitchen lighting plan. Kitchen lights are important because they influence the overall appearance of the room. It can make the kitchen look wider, cleaner and more welcoming when properly illuminated. On the other hand, if you install the wrong type of fixtures it can make the room look awkward and unbecoming. In drawing your lighting plans you have to sketch in details the layout of the kitchen. Draw the actual dimensions, location of the appliances and cabinets. Carefully think of where you will place the switches for easy access. Typically these are placed near the doorways and are 3 way switches. Task lighting is placed where most of the work is being done so your switch must be somewhere close by. Draw in all the locations where you will place the lights, the switches and the type of fixture that you need to install.

Does a Solar Screen Really Work?

posted on 5 September 2011

I initially had some apprehensions about using solar screens. At first it looked gaudy and I thought it might make my interiors look dark. A solar screen is said to be effective in preventing outdoor sunlight and heat from penetrating into your windows. So I ordered some screens online by giving the manufacturer my specifications like the exact measurements of my windows. The panels arrived and they did the installation for me. The screens were installed on the windows facing the east and west side of the house. This is where the sun shined thru the windows the most and at intense heat. Well after a day I noticed the difference. Inside the room the air felt cooler. We now have some privacy during the day time because the screens had a slight tint so people outside can't see what's inside. We can have a full view of the outdoors and we no longer have to draw the curtains. I'd say solar screens really work like the advertisement said it would.

Get Window Valance Ideas To Match Your Interests

posted on 30 August 2011

My friends and I really spend our weekends playing poker. I cannot really remember how this became a weekly ritual for us but it is always done in my house. I’ve spared an extra storage room so we can have a place to hang out. After a couple of months, I have put an effort to make it look more like a game room than a spare room. There was a poker table added in the middle and chairs so we can play better. There is a refrigerator to keep the drinks and food for us. Yes, I’ve also adjusted the lighting to make it more comfortable to stay in. Recently, I added a game board banner valance to the room. window valance ideas are getting more and more interesting now. This specific valance which I put had billiard balls and cards as the design. This finally made the room more beautiful. I never imagined a small room will look wonderful with a few changes done to it.

A Night of Chinese Cuisine for Karl and I

posted on 14 August 2011

It is a Friday afternoon. Just when everyone else is ready to go home, here I am stuck in the office. I could not go home unless I am able to contact a particular Nuneaton roofing company, which my boss had asked me to call earlier. I have been trying to do so for several hours today but for some reasons, I just could not get through. Just before the clock strikes six, a friend of mine called me. He asked if we could have dinner together. I told him I would love to, if only I could get my job done before midnight and he laughed. He knew I was exaggerating. The guy is actually Karl. He has been asking me out for the last two weeks and even if I wanted to go out with him, time hasn't been my friend. But now that I am stuck, I thought that this could be a good time for me and Karl to finally meet up. So I called him and asked if he could drop by the office. He did and he brought some of my favorite Chinese cuisines.
